Thurston County is located in the state of Washington and at the time of the 2010 census had a population of 252,264 residents. Thurston County was formed in 1852 with Olympia being the largest city in the county as well as the state capital. Other cities in the county include: Lacey, Rainier, Tenino, Tumwater, and Yelm. Thurston County is included in the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area. Thurston County is located at the southern point of Puget Sound. Nearby are the rugged Cascade Mountains to the east, and the Pacific coastline is an hour drive to the west. Seattle lies 60 miles to the north, and Portland Oregon is 100 miles south. Thurston County has a total area of 774 square miles with all but 52 square miles of that being land. 

The Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge is a prominent feature of Thurston County. Most of the estuaries in the state of Washington have been dredged filled, or developed, however, the Nisqually River has been designated specifically for wildlife. Established in 1974, Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was created to protect the delta and the diversity of wildlife in the region. In 2009 the estuary was restored removing dikes and reconnecting more than 750 acres with the tides of Puget Sound. The restoration of the  estuary was the largest project of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. The refuge is a biologically diverse area supporting a variety of habitats. The freshwater of the Nisqually River meets with the saltwater of Puget Sound forming an estuary, rich in nutrients, which supports a wide variety of sea life.
