East Tacoma is a community in the great Pacific Northwest city of Tacoma, Washington. East Tacoma is an area bounded by East 72nd to the south, I-5 to the north, Pacific Avenue to the east, and Portland Avenue to the west. The great thing about East Tacoma is that it’s the portion of the city closest to Seattle. Commuters skip right over the bulk of Tacoma’s freeway traffic to get onto I-5 at Portland Avenue, and avoid the traffic backups around the Tacoma Dome. Pierce Transit provides bus service that covers East Tacoma nicely. Residents can easily get to downtown, to the Tacoma Dome station, to the Tacoma Mall area via bus, and often without having to transfer.
There are some great things to do in East Tacoma that are often overlooked. There are lots of great restaurants in East Tacoma. Emerald Queen Casino is in East Tacoma and features gaming, great buffets, and concerts. One of the best hikes in Tacoma, Swan Creek trails, is located in East Tacoma. Just like the rest of Tacoma, East Tacoma has some great parks. Stewart Heights Park features a large skatepark, playground equipment, and fields. McKinley Park features fields, playground, and a splash park as well. East Tacoma has a nice mix of eateries and restaurants, most of them being small, quaint places where personal attention is still the norm. Several local spots are noted for their great “happy hour,” many with vegan and vegetarian menu options.
Generally considered an older section of town, there are many hidden treasures to be found in the East Tacoma housing market. Starter homes abound in the community of East Tacoma. Housing options here are affordable, and it’s a great area for first time home buyers. In 2016, homes in East Tacoma sold for an average of $176,000, however, many homes are price even lower. Homes in East Tacoma are generally between 1,000 and 2,400 square feet, and homes are available in a range of sizes, shapes and architectural styles, representing several eras. Homes in East Tacoma vary street to street. Well-kept homes from the 1940s and 50s are plentiful and there are newer developments as well. Condos in Tacoma start at around $75,000 and go up in price to about $2,495,000 for luxury units with amazing amenities. Single-family homes start at around $24,000 and go up in price to nearly $2,495,000 for stately mansions with exceptional waterfront views. Lots start at an affordable $25,000 rising in price to around $1,200,000 for larger lots in highly sought-after locations.
