Des Moines is a waterfront community located between Tacoma and Seattle in the state of Washington. Des Moines is in the 09198 zip code and has a population of around 30,000. Des Moines has a total area of 6.5 square miles. While there’s no evidence Native Americans built permanent settlements in Des Moines, there is however evidence the Duwamish and Muckleshoot Indian tribes came to Des Moines for fishing and clamming. The areas of Des Moines was originally homesteaded by a group of settlers around 1867. The city grew substantially after WWII and was incorporated in 1959. Des Moines is bordered by the suburbs of Federal Way on the south, Burien to the north, Normandy Park to the northwest, Seatac to the northeast, and Kent to the east.
Des Moines is one of the few places along the shoreline where the topography facilitates easy access to the water. Des Moines has numerous public parks and beaches on Puget Sound. The most used State park, Saltwater State Park, is on a ravine between the Woodmont and Xenith neighborhoods. The city marina is conveniently located right next door to the small-town shopping district which is ideal for both the shopping enthusiast and fisherman. The fishing pier and boardwalk are a great place to stroll as the sun sets behind the majestic Olympic Mountains. Mid-winter brings the occasional snow day, but that’s easily balanced by summer temperatures rarely exceeding 90 degrees. Des Moines is home to Highline College. Most of the students in Des Moines attend schools in the Highline Public School District with a few attending schools in the Federal Way School District.
Most of the city is situated on gently slopes that roll down to the water of Puget Sound from a elevation of 400 feet providing gorgeous views of the sound and Vashon Island. Condominiums, townhomes, single-family homes and lots upon which to build a custom home are all options currently available in the Des Moines real estate market. The price for condos start at approximately $99,975 and go up in price to about $659,950 for units with more highly sought-after amenities. Single-family homes start at approximately $199,900 and go up to as much as $4,888,000 for luxury, custom homes with stunning views in prime locations. Lots start at around $40,000 and go up to $800,000 for parcels in the most coveted areas of town.
