Central Tacoma, the “Heart of Tacoma”, is becoming a very popular neighborhood just minutes from downtown Tacoma. People are gravitating to the area because they prefer to ride the bus, walk, or bike to work. Great access to highways nearby make it convenient for those who prefer to drive to work. Streets in Central Tacoma are tree-lined with walkable sidewalks and plenty of on-street parking. The boundaries of Central Tacoma are 6th Avenue to the north, South Orchard to the west, South L and Tacoma Avenue South to the east, and WA-16 and South Center Street to the south.
Central Tacoma is teeming with restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and other quaint shopping venues. Farmer’s markets held throughout the summer, as well as community events and festivals, create a vibrancy in Central Tacoma which continually draws new residents to the area. Scott Pierson Trail, a convenient 5-mile trail, provides recreational opportunities for bicyclists and pedestrians, and runs all the way to Gig Harbor. One of the most beloved parks in the city, Franklin Park, is located in Central Tacoma. Recently renovated, the 20-acre park features “spray grounds” to keep you cool in the summertime, playgrounds, picnic area, walkways, and intricate trails. Cheney Stadium is in the neighborhood and provides residents the opportunity to catch a game of the minor league baseball team the Rainiers and to take in fireworks after every game during summer play. Snake Lake Park offers some of the best hiking trails in the city along with an interactive nature center, a favorite with kids in the area. Central Tacoma boasts five elementary schools, one preparatory school, one high school, and a state college.
Architectural styles of homes in the area feature, craftsman, cape cod, a few Victorians, and the occasional new construction, although that’s infrequent. Lots upon which to build are rare and currently a single lot, approximately a quarter of an acre in size, is listing for $550,000. Condominiums and single-family homes are a bit easier to find and are generally affordable when compared to real estate in other parts of Tacoma.
